Chapter Forty
Ray wasnât exactly sure how to find Ryan. He went to Sarahâs house at lunchtime to check if the guy was hanging around. Most of the time heâd be near the house, running around in wolf form acting strangely dog-like. Sarahâs training sessions with him were one of the few times he conceded to being human. Ray wondered if it was his simple brain. He seemed to get easily frustrated with the human things he had to re-learn. Sarah had explained the differences between bitten wolves and born ones to him a while ago. He knew Ryan was pretty much harmless as a wolf, and he knew that worried Sarah. She didnât think he could hold his own in a fight with another wolf. He understood why sheâd felt compelled to look after him. He wasnât so sure why she needed him today unless she had some kind of training for him in White Oaks.
âRyan?â He called out, standing on the front porch. He looked at the set of keys in his hand and dropped them on the porch. Usually the noise made Ryan come running. He waited for a bit, staring into the woods and listening out for any sudden noises. The wolf either wasnât near enough to hear the keys or he knew it wasnât Sarah who was calling for him. âDamn,â he muttered, picking his keys back up.
He didnât need to find him for a few hours really, but it would have been so much simpler to find him and give him orders passed down from his alpha to get him to wait at the house until he was needed than it would be to wander about the woods all day calling on him.
Going into the house, he called out for Ryan once more on the off chance heâd gotten locked in. He had a habit of sneaking into the house and hiding under Sarahâs bed. Sarah thought it was hilarious, but he was the one who always got caught out by the wolf. The glowing eyes under the bed freaked him out the first time heâd seen them. Heâd told Sarah he was convinced there was a demon in her room waiting for her and sheâd laughed, saying sheâd know if there was a demon in her house. She hadnât even told Ryan off for it.
The house was empty. He went out back and called for Ryan again out there. Nothing was happening. He swore under his breath. Sarah needed him. Heâd have to find a way to bring Ryan. He cursed again when he realised that probably meant bringing him in human form, which was going to be harder than finding him. He grabbed a cider from the fridge and checked his work phone. It tended to be quiet the days it wasnât ringing off the hook. There hadnât been a call all morning. Dev could cover when he was taking Ryan through to White Oaks.
He uncapped the cider bottle and went back outside. It had started to rain.
